Staff and students from Sarah Lawrence College’s Center for the Urban River at Beczak (CURB) were praised and featured at the New York State Outdoor Education Association’s (NYSOEA) Annual Conference, held November 4 in Fishkill, New York. CURB’s Educator and Science Coordinator Katie Lamboy and Sarah Lawrence student Ishika Joshi ’25 each received awards recognizing their outstanding work in the education field.

History Faculty Member Mary Dillard Named to Yonkers Human Rights Commission

Sarah Lawrence College faculty member Mary Dillard (History) has been named a commissioner for the Yonkers Human Rights Commission, one of the oldest such commissions in the United States. She will serve for a three year term, joining her fellow commissioners as they support Yonkers residents in combating discrimination in housing, education, and employment, among other areas.

Over the spring semester, the iconic Westlands wisteria arbor underwent a much needed-restoration. The arbor, becoming unstable in its old age and struggling to support the beloved wisteria, was disassembled in January and then rebuilt over the last few months. And just in time for Earth Day, we’ve spotted the first green buds signaling that spring is indeed here!

Calling All Community Scientists: CURB’s Annual Eel Count is Underway!

Every spring, the American eel begins its long (and mysterious!) journey from the Sargasso Sea to the Hudson River. And for the last 10 years, Sarah Lawrence's Center for the Urban River at Beczak team of scientists, students, and community members have come together to count thousands of migrating glass eels traveling up the Hudson River.
